WESTWOOD, Lassen County — The former railroad connecting Westwood’s lumber industry with Susanville is now remembered through the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail, a public route used for hiking, biking, horseback riding and heritage tourism.

U.S. Forest Service interpretive materials describe the route as following the Southern Pacific Railroad’s former Fernley and Lassen Branch Line. The railroad was built in 1914 to serve the Red River Lumber Company at Westwood. Rail service ended in 1956, setting the stage for a later conversion of the corridor into recreation access.

Where does the actual rail trail end?

The Forest Service’s Westwood and Susanville visitor interpretation plan describes approximately 25.4 miles of rail trail from Susanville to Mason Station on County Road A-21. From Mason Station, the connection continues for approximately 4.5 miles along existing roads into Westwood.

That distinction matters for families choosing an outing: not every mile between Westwood and Susanville is separated from ordinary vehicle traffic. Cyclists and hikers should plan road sections carefully and review a current map.

Historic landmarks at the Westwood end

The Forest Service notes an interpretive kiosk at Westwood and a carved Paul Bunyan statue associated with the community’s logging history. These landmarks reflect how the town developed around timber and railroad transportation, while the former railbed follows the Susan River canyon.

What should riders and walkers check?

The trail has historic bridges, tunnels and exposed locations where weather can affect access. Surface conditions can vary from packed gravel to sections needing maintenance. Winter ice, snow, fallen trees and temporary closures can make segments difficult or inaccessible.

Before departure, use the Lassen National Forest for current recreation guidance and check roads through Caltrans QuickMap. Carry sufficient water and choose a distance appropriate for the group; the whole trail is too long for a casual out-and-back walk.
