WILLITS NEWS | ORIGINAL COMMUNITY REPORT · OCTOBER 2026
The California State Coastal Conservancy documented a June 24, 2026 planning award for a potential 12.7-mile section of the Great Redwood Trail between Willits and Longvale. The proposed corridor would connect the city with unincorporated Mendocino County areas, but remains in planning rather than public trail operation.
Details from the official project record
The grant supports topographical surveys, a geotechnical report, preparation of approximately 65-percent engineering designs, permit applications, construction cost estimates and outreach to community members and California Native American tribes. These steps are needed to evaluate terrain, structures, ecological conditions and potential trail connections before a fully engineered construction contract can be considered.
Why this is important locally
A future multiuse trail could offer recreation and transportation options and may support regional tourism. But a design award cannot be counted as 12.7 miles of open path. The project description does not establish a first day of public access, completed construction or a finalized trail maintenance agreement.
What to watch next
Willits News will follow route alternatives, tribal consultation, environmental safeguards, full funding needs and subsequent building decisions. Hikers and cyclists should use currently authorized trails and not enter a closed former rail corridor based on a proposed alignment.
