YREKA NEWS | DOWNTOWN & DEVELOPMENT — Yreka, Siskiyou County, California. One of downtown Yreka’s most recognizable historic buildings entered a new phase in 2026, with an effort to turn a formerly shuttered library into a working center for local entrepreneurs, collaboration and community gatherings.

According to the Siskiyou County Economic Development Council (SEDC), the renovated Carnegie building and its adjoining campus at 412 and 404 West Miner Street opened in January 2026 as a rural business innovation center. The project pairs historic preservation with spaces intended for business activity and neighborhood events.

What has been created?

SEDC describes a collection of spaces rather than a single new office. The campus includes a community room with space for 45 people, an 18-person board room, a pop-up retail marketplace, a courtyard and plaza for outdoor gatherings, and a solar-array exhibit. Readers should check with the operator about which spaces can be booked or accessed on a particular day; the project description is not a schedule of public opening hours.

A historic building with a different mission

Designed by architect W. H. Weeks and completed in 1915, the original Yreka Carnegie Library served the community for generations and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Rehabilitation required not only funding and technical work but also a plan for how the structure could remain useful to the city after its library era.

The development council purchased the neighboring 404 West Miner Street property in 2024 to broaden the project beyond the original building. The stated aim is to encourage activity and investment along the West Miner Street corridor. Whether that promise results in measurable new business growth is an outcome to examine over time, not something an opening announcement alone proves.

How the rehabilitation was supported

SEDC lists a mixture of public programs, financial tools and private contributions behind the work, including USDA-related rural innovation support, California Jobs First, new markets tax credits, city investment and foundation support. The project page also lists a 24.5-kilowatt solar installation and multiple business and community partners.

What residents and business owners can watch next

Useful indicators include occupancy of the marketplace, community-room use, business advising activity and the number of local events or partnerships hosted at the campus. Those indicators would help distinguish the physical restoration of an important building from its longer-term economic effects.

One concrete example has already emerged: the Shasta-Cascade Small Business Development Center announced its Yreka advising office at 412 W. Miner Street in June 2026. That service can help bring regular activity into the new center while making support more accessible to Siskiyou County entrepreneurs.
