California driver’s licenses can be renewed online, by mail, or in person depending on your situation. The fastest path for many people is online through a MyDMV account.
Can you renew online?
DMV currently says online renewal may be available when you are within 90 days before expiration or up to 12 months after expiration, you are not changing your address or personal description, you are not applying for a REAL ID for the first time, and you are not renewing a commercial license.
Before you start
- Check the expiration date on your license.
- Make sure DMV has your current address. DMV advises changing it at least three days before an online renewal.
- Have your MyDMV login and payment method ready.
When you may need a different process
First-time REAL ID applications, commercial licenses and some renewals requiring testing or an office visit follow different rules. Drivers age 70 and older should review DMV’s current renewal guidance for their age group.
