Effective October 24, 2026. This policy covers California58.com and its California58 Local newspaper subdomains, including Searles Valley News. These are publications managed within the California58 editorial network. It does not automatically cover the separately operated websites of outside vendors or RusCali.com, which has its own policy.
Contact for privacy questions
Contact the California58 editorial operation at california58com@gmail.com. Please identify the relevant newspaper or subdomain and explain whether your request concerns a newsletter, contact submission, classified advertisement, account, image, comment, or another service. Do not email identity documents or other sensitive records unless we specifically explain a secure process.
Information we may receive
- Information you submit voluntarily: name, email address, phone number, approximate community or ZIP code, the message you send, attached content and contact preferences when you send news tips, correction requests, event or business submissions, forms, classifieds, comments or newsletter subscriptions.
- Site operations and security: internet protocol (IP) address, device and browser information, timestamps, referring pages, access/error logs and anti-spam or security signals, where collected by our host, website systems or vendors.
- Usage analytics and advertising: pages visited, interactions, approximate location inferred by services, cookies or similar identifiers, when used by analytics platforms, ad networks, social embeds or affiliate measurement partners.
- Transactions and services: when you make a donation, place an advertisement or pay for a service, information necessary to process the request, associated order/reference details and payment status. Payment-card details may be processed directly by an external payment provider, such as Stripe or PayPal, under that provider’s privacy policy; do not send card numbers to our newsroom email.
Why information is used
We use information as appropriate to provide the requested service; communicate about submitted news, corrections or local editions; publish material only after editorial review; maintain subscriptions, accounts or listings where enabled; respond to security incidents and abuse; operate audience analytics; support appropriately labeled advertising and affiliate links; and comply with legal obligations. Sending a tip does not guarantee publication, confidentiality, anonymity or a response.
Categories of recipients and embedded services
Hosting companies, email and newsletter service providers, analytics providers, payment processors, content-embed platforms, anti-spam tools and advertising or affiliate partners may receive technical or submitted data needed to provide their services. We use services that may include Google services, social-media video and image embeds, ad-network placements, and third-party payment providers. A third-party embedded video, advertisement or social-media post may allow its operator to collect technical information directly from your browser, potentially across websites. Our editorial content is independent of advertisers; advertising delivery is a separate technical service.
Cookies, cross-site activity, and browser signals
Cookies and similar technologies may support operation, visitor preferences, audience measurement, attribution, marketing and advertisements. Some third parties may observe browsing activity across different websites when their embeds or ads are used. California58 does not represent that the legacy browser Do Not Track signal is implemented as a universal site-wide disable switch; such a signal may not prevent analytics or third-party requests. Where an opt-out preference signal, including Global Privacy Control, carries a legal requirement applicable to our processing, that requirement must be honored. We are reviewing our current vendor configurations and will update this notice or the available choices as required. You may use browser cookie controls, privacy extensions, third-party opt-outs or contact us regarding applicable rights.
Sharing, advertising, and personal-information rights
We do not publish private contact submissions merely because they were received. Information may be disclosed to processors and service providers for the functions described above, or when required by law. Personalized advertising arrangements can implicate statutory definitions of “sharing” even without a conventional sale; we do not claim that all advertising partners are exempt from such rules. The California Consumer Privacy Act and other laws grant rights when their applicability criteria are met. If you seek access, correction, deletion, restriction or an opt-out, please email us with the relevant service and nature of your request. We will examine the request and applicable rules, verify identity only when appropriate, and respond as required by law. Such rights may have exceptions, including protections for journalism and freedom of expression.
Retention and security
Records may be kept while needed for the requested editorial or business purpose, operational reliability, lawful recordkeeping, investigations, legal defense or legitimate archiving. Retention can differ by service and provider; we do not promise a universal deletion period that has not been technically implemented. No internet transmission or third-party tool is guaranteed secure. Avoid providing sensitive personal, health or financial information in ordinary email or public comment forms.
Public submissions, minors, and copyright
Material voluntarily submitted for possible publication undergoes editorial review. Sending a photograph does not automatically grant a right to reuse someone else’s work, and we may request proof of authorship or license. We may decline personal information about children, private allegations or material creating avoidable safety risks. Parents or guardians with questions about a child’s data can contact the privacy address above.
Changes and effective date
Material updates will be reflected on this page by changing the effective date and, where appropriate, making an additional notice. You may request a copy of this policy or raise concerns using the contact address above. This policy is intended to describe the practices and categories relevant to California58; independent audits of each installed advertising, form, analytics, email and payment integration remain part of our ongoing compliance program.
