California — November 4, 2026. Thanksgiving planning is an opportunity to spend less money on groceries while keeping more edible food out of the trash. California’s recycling agency, CalRecycle, encourages residents to prevent waste before it happens, rather than dealing only with scraps afterward.

Make the shopping list match the guest list

Before buying a turkey and side dishes for November 26, ask guests which foods they plan to bring and roughly how many people will attend. A simple inventory of the refrigerator, freezer and pantry helps avoid buying duplicate ingredients. CalRecycle identifies buying only what is needed as a basic waste-prevention strategy.

Keep foods safe before saving them

Food-saving advice never overrides food safety. The CDC advises refrigerating perishable leftovers within two hours of cooking and eating most refrigerated Thanksgiving dishes within three to four days. Freeze suitable portions for longer storage, and label containers with the date.

Sharing and cleanup

Consider sending guests home with properly chilled leftovers or sharing surplus through an organization that confirms it can accept prepared food. Rules for food donations vary, so call first. For scraps that cannot be prevented, follow the collection instructions issued by your own local jurisdiction; accepted materials and pickup schedules vary among California cities and unincorporated communities.

CalRecycle describes reducing food waste as a way to save resources, strengthen food security and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For more November holiday resources, see California58’s Thanksgiving 2026 guide.
