HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. — November 5, 2026. The North Coast faces an urgent transportation question: what should local officials do when a coastal road can no longer be protected economically from erosion? In October, Humboldt County’s supervisors voted to abandon a proposed $3.8 million project to raise and strengthen part of Centerville Road near Ferndale, choosing instead to have staff examine relocation farther inland. The decision is documented in county supervisors’ record 26-849.
Centerville Road: the beach route under threat
Storm waves, rising seas and unstable bluffs have damaged access near Centerville Beach. The previously authorized project would have raised roughly 0.17 miles of roadway by 10 feet and added a protective rock structure, but officials questioned its long-term value because adjacent parts of the road are also at risk. This is not a claim that the entire road collapsed on November 5. Read the Ferndale-area local article for the county decision, residents’ objections and alternate-route questions.
What winter preparedness means for Ferndale
Ferndale-area residents have also been invited to a November 17 flood-preparedness meeting as local agencies prepare for the rainy season. The Ferndale local newspaper’s meeting guide explains the posted event. The meeting is a future opportunity to ask about flood safety and local access; this article does not state that the meeting has already happened or that Centerville Road will be closed at a particular time.
Other regional hazards
At 8:56 p.m. on November 4, a separate magnitude 5.0 earthquake occurred offshore near Petrolia. This seismic event should not be presented as the cause of Centerville Road’s longer-term coastal erosion without scientific evidence. Read the earthquake update for the USGS record and emergency information.
Where residents can check reliable road status
Follow Humboldt County road condition notices for local closures and repairs and Caltrans QuickMap for state highways. Coastal residents should avoid unstable bluff edges, eroded shoulders and any posted closure.
