DEATH VALLEY NEWS | ROAD RECOVERY | OCTOBER 2026

The National Park Service restored access to Lower Wildrose Road in June 2026, bringing back an important high-elevation route following almost three years of storm-related closure. The reopened road is not in the same condition motorists would remember from before the floods.

Nearly three years of damage

Floodwater driven by the remnants of Hurricane Hilary in August 2023 tore away pavement and left a deep washout. Crews first had to restore basic continuity across the damaged corridor. The park’s June 3 notice describes a reopening after interim work rather than completion of a permanent paved reconstruction.

New restrictions for drivers

Lower Wildrose, also known as Trona-Wildrose Road, is unpaved following its repair. Vehicles longer than 25 feet cannot use the reopened segment, according to the National Park Service. Drivers should slow down for loose material and soft shoulders, especially when another vehicle approaches on the narrow road.

Other facilities may still be hazardous

The stairs at Wildrose Station picnic area were still identified as unsafe because of flood erosion in the reopening announcement. Officials plan more stabilization work in future years but do not plan to restore the former pavement. The reopened route therefore demands a different level of attention than a fully paved highway.

Check on the day you travel

Floods, erosion and active repair work can change access with little notice. Before traveling, use the park’s current conditions report rather than an old social media post or a navigation app. Death Valley News will link future local road updates to the park’s own notices so readers can confirm what is open.
