DEATH VALLEY NEWS | TRAVEL SAFETY | OCTOBER 2026

The southern portion of Badwater Road reopened on January 31, 2026, after months of closure caused by repeated flooding. The National Park Service emphasized that reopening does not mean the southern 45-mile segment had returned to normal driving conditions.

What forced the extended closure

The road had been closed since August 25 following flash flooding, then received additional storm damage in September, November, December and early January. Crews removed large deposits of rock and sand, some reaching five feet deep, and reused material to stabilize eroded shoulders. The January reopening restored a travel connection despite unfinished repairs.

What motorists may encounter

Park officials warned about missing pavement, loose gravel, soft shoulders and abrupt drop-offs next to driving surfaces. These are not cosmetic problems: a driver pulling aside for another vehicle or using the shoulder could encounter unstable ground. Speeds and vehicle choice should reflect actual conditions rather than the appearance of a formerly paved road on a map.

Why the reopening matters

Badwater Road links some of Death Valley’s best-known viewpoints with its southern approaches. Reopening can support tourism, maintenance access and route options for surrounding communities, but only as conditions permit. Operators planning tours and residents arranging lengthy desert drives should build extra time into their plans.

Verify live updates

The park’s current conditions page is the authority for fresh closures. If heavy rain is forecast or flood damage is reported again, do not assume the January 2026 access notice still describes the situation. This report records an important reopening milestone, not a guarantee of year-round access.
