BIG SUR NEWS | LOCAL NEWS · 2026
California State Parks has scheduled Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park to reopen to visitors on Friday, October 16, 2026, following closure during the Timber Fire. The announcement is encouraging for local recreation businesses and travelers, but it does not reopen every trail or eliminate hazards in burned areas.
Facilities expected to return
In its October 9 news release, the state identified day-use areas, campground, Buzzards Roost Trail, River Path, Nature Trail, Redwood Grove Boardwalk, Nature Center, Campfire Center and Big Sur Lodge among areas planned to reopen. This is the announced schedule as of October 14; residents should verify actual status on October 16 and later.
Six trails with continued restrictions
The state said Pfeiffer Falls, Valley View, Oak Grove, Mount Manuel, Big Sur River Gorge and Pine Ridge trails would remain closed pending further assessment and recovery. Visitors should not interpret the return of campground bookings as permission to hike into fire-damaged or posted closed areas.
Why the fire still matters
California State Parks reported that the Timber Fire burned about 517 acres within the park. Burned landscapes may have damaged trees, rocks, erosion and increased debris-flow risk during storms. The park had also served as an important emergency response location supporting firefighters and other agencies.
What local visitors and operators need to check
Campground availability, trail information, park restrictions and Highway 1 status can change separately. People planning trips should consult both State Parks and Caltrans. Big Sur News will follow confirmed access announcements and distinguish a scheduled opening from a completed reopening.
