BIG SUR, Monterey County — October 17, 2026. The Timber Fire, which began August 8 southeast of Loma Vista in the Big Sur region, was listed at 25,352 acres and 97% containment in the latest incident information published October 16, according to an incident record maintained by CAL FIRE for the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office and the Los Padres National Forest. A high containment percentage does not mean every road, trail or recreation area is open.

What officials reported on October 16

The incident update time-stamped October 16, 8:10 a.m., showed no change in acreage or containment from the prior agency report. Fire crews previously reported checking lingering heat, strengthening control lines and carrying out suppression repairs. See CAL FIRE’s Timber Fire incident record and dated updates ↗.

What about evacuation orders, Highway 1 and state parks?

An October 7 agency update reported that all remaining evacuation orders for the incident had been lifted at that time. Readers must still check Alert Monterey County for any newly issued warnings, and Caltrans QuickMap for actual highway restrictions. Do not rely on an old closure report as a live road or evacuation status.

Why this is different from California’s fire-resource staging map

The October 16 Cal OES preparedness map listed 14 counties receiving additional firefighters in advance of dangerous weather. Monterey County was not in that list, yet a confirmed Timber Fire incident existed in Monterey County. This illustrates why a map of prepositioned equipment must not be used as a map of all active fires.
