AGUA DULCE NEWS | ORIGINAL LOCAL NEWS · OCTOBER 2026

Los Angeles County filed an environmental notice September 9, 2026 for a targeted habitat intervention in the Texas Canyon watershed, an open-space area associated with Agua Dulce and Rowher Flats. The project seeks to suppress an invasive tree species commonly called Tree of Heaven, Ailanthus altissima, before a small population expands.

What the official record establishes

The county describes a roughly half-acre site near Forest Routes 5N14 and 5N18. The applicant plans an integrated pest-management approach targeting both large parent trees and new root sprouts, including removal of leaf canopies and blocking sunlight over several months to prevent further growth. The proposal follows years of local observations in the watershed and consultations with land-management partners.

Public-interest questions

Tree of Heaven can spread through root sprouts and compete with native vegetation. Targeted early control can reduce the scale of later intervention, but success depends on monitoring for regrowth and preventing repeated establishment. The county says the project qualifies as a small habitat restoration activity; this is a regulatory finding, not proof of completed eradication or guaranteed habitat recovery.

Next reporting steps

Agua Dulce News will follow field implementation, methods and monitoring updates. Residents should not independently apply treatment chemicals or remove vegetation on public land on the strength of a news article. Questions should be directed to the responsible land managers.
