KLAMATH, Del Norte County — Coastal viewpoints near the mouth of the Klamath River are among northern California’s memorable public landscapes, but the roads leading to them are not suitable for every vehicle.
The National Park Service scenic drives guide describes Requa Road and Coastal Drive as steep or narrow in places. Travelers in large motorhomes or towing trailers should pay attention to these route-specific warnings instead of following a navigation app uncritically.
Requa Road and Klamath River Overlook
From U.S. 101 north of Klamath, the paved Requa Road travels approximately 2¼ miles to the Klamath River Overlook. The road is steep and narrow; the park advises against RVs, motorhomes and trailers. The overlook sits about 650 feet above the ocean and provides views of the estuary and coastline.
According to the NPS overlook information, picnic tables and interpretive materials help visitors understand both the coastal ecosystem and the area’s long Indigenous history, including the relationship between the Yurok people and the Klamath River.
Coastal Drive is not a full paved loop for all vehicles
The NPS explains that part of the old Coastal Drive south of Alder Camp is closed to motor vehicles. The remaining northern loop is partly one-way and includes an unpaved segment near High Bluff Overlook. Larger recreational vehicles cannot safely complete the full route. A designated turn-around may be appropriate depending on conditions and vehicle size.
High Bluff Overlook has picnic areas and views toward the Pacific. The route also passes a historic World War II radar station built to resemble a farmhouse and barn.
Wildlife and weather
Coastal fog can limit visibility, and wind can be strong even when conditions are mild inland. The NPS identifies the Klamath River Overlook as a good place to watch for whales and seabirds, with gray whale migration peaking at different times of year. Sightings are never guaranteed.
For a safe trip, check Redwood National and State Parks alerts and conditions before traveling, and respect posted signs. Scenic-road descriptions do not guarantee day-of access.
