INDEPENDENCE, Inyo County — Visitors to Manzanar National Historic Site just south of Independence should check road access as well as museum hours before leaving home.

The National Park Service alerts page describes a Caltrans U.S. Highway 395 pavement project beginning May 11, 2026 near the site. The park said it would remain open while lane closures and detours affected access. Its guidance warned that common mapping apps may not accurately show the required entrance during construction and identified a south-entrance approach while work continued.

Do not assume the detour remains in effect at the moment of your visit. This is a documented project notice; check the NPS conditions page and Caltrans QuickMap for the current driving arrangement.

What are the current listed hours?

According to NPS operating hours, the Manzanar Visitor Center is open Friday through Monday, 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and closed Tuesday through Thursday. The reconstructed Block 14 exhibits are listed as open daily 9 a.m.–4:15 p.m., while the outdoor grounds and driving tour are generally accessible from sunrise to sunset.

The visitor center provides historical displays, a short film and information about the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. Manzanar is a National Historic Site, not a recreation-themed attraction; visitors should treat historic buildings and the cemetery with respect.

Entrance fees and practical details

The NPS says there is no admission fee. The site is located at 5001 Highway 395, Independence, CA 93526, approximately six miles south of town. Its listed information number is 760-878-2194.

Bring drinking water, expect strong sun and variable valley winds, and confirm facility availability before traveling. A historical site with open grounds can still have a closed museum or changing access route.
