SHAVER LAKE, Fresno County — Families heading to Shaver Lake with a boat should distinguish a public launch from a commercial marina, and confirm operations before making the mountain drive.

The California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways facility directory lists five facilities for the Shaver Lake body of water, including the Shaver Lake Public Boat Launch–County of Fresno, Camp Edison boating access, Shaver Lake Marina and Sierra Marina.

What does “public” mean?

A facility appearing in a public agency directory means it is identified as publicly accessible; it does not necessarily mean parking or launching is free, that fuel or boat rentals are available, or that ramps are currently usable. Water levels, seasonal staffing, construction and weather can all affect operations.

The county public launch is identified in the state’s dedicated facility record as a public launch on Shaver Lake. The directory includes a contact number, 559-488-3004, and links to maps for locating access points.

Safety before putting a boat in the water

High-elevation lakes can experience cold water, sudden wind and fast-changing conditions. Boaters should check local launch hours and any low-water restrictions, wear appropriately sized life jackets and carry required safety equipment. Rules vary by vessel and activity.

California’s Division of Boating and Waterways provides statewide safety guidance, boating laws and educational resources. Those general resources do not replace rules posted at individual marinas or the county launch.

A quick checklist for Shaver Lake visitors

  • Confirm the exact launch or marina and its current hours.
  • Ask about fees, trailers and parking capacity.
  • Review weather and wind forecasts, not just conditions in Fresno.
  • Inspect the boat, trailer, lights and required safety equipment.
  • Ask the facility about any invasive species inspection requirements before launch.

The state directory is a useful starting point for locating access, but Shaver Lake News will not imply that a particular dock or launch is operational without day-of confirmation.
