SHINGLETOWN, Shasta County — Travelers using the Shingletown side of Lassen Volcanic National Park should plan for fall service changes, particularly after the park’s northwest visitor contact station completes its summer season.

The National Park Service’s 2026 operating-hours schedule lists the Loomis Museum season as May 21 through October 12. That means the museum’s scheduled seasonal service has ended as of October 15. The park remains open to visitors in other accessible areas, but facility hours and road access are separate questions.

Why fall travel requires a fresh road check

Lassen Volcanic National Park’s main road crosses high elevations and can close when snow settles. The park’s fall visitor guide says the through road historically often closes in mid-to-late November, but has closed as early as October 18 in some years. The exact closing date is not fixed.

Smaller roads serving Butte Lake, Juniper Lake and Warner Valley are not ordinarily plowed for winter. Weather can make them impassable before a formal seasonal closure notice.

What is available elsewhere in the park?

The Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center near the southwestern entrance has a different operating schedule. Travelers coming from Shingletown should not assume it is immediately accessible from the north if the trans-park highway closes.

The park’s alerts and conditions page lists road-related incidents, trail restrictions, construction, fire concerns and park advisories. Roads outside the park should also be checked through Caltrans QuickMap.

Before leaving Shingletown

  • Check whether the park’s northwest entrance road is passable on the day of travel.
  • Review museum and restroom availability separately from the park entrance.
  • Carry layers, food, water and navigation resources; remote mountain roads may have limited service.
  • Do not begin a planned through-drive without confirming that the park highway is open end-to-end.

This update refers to the National Park Service’s 2026 operating schedule; it does not claim that Lassen’s main road has already closed for winter.
