BORREGO SPRINGS, California — October marks a seasonal change for Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Cooler mornings bring renewed interest in hiking and wildlife watching, but the park’s vast distances and changing road restrictions mean preparation remains essential.

Visitor Center fall hours

According to California State Parks’ hiking information, the Anza-Borrego Visitor Center operates daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the October 1–May 31 season. The center is located at the west end of Palm Canyon Drive near Borrego Springs. Ask staff for current trail maps and advice before choosing a route.

Important notice for Coyote Canyon

The park’s official park status page includes a notice that Coyote Canyon Road is closed ahead at the third crossing, with limited parking near the closure gate. Such advisories may change. A closure affecting a route is not a statement that all of Anza-Borrego is closed. Travelers should consult the official status page shortly before departure and follow posted gates and signs.

Choose a suitable walk

The park identifies options beyond long backcountry hikes, including an approximately 0.4-mile accessible Visitor Center Loop and an approximately 0.75-mile accessible trail linking the campground and Visitor Center. The state accessibility guide lists slope and surface information so visitors can judge whether a trail suits their needs.

More challenging desert hikes require special care. State Parks urges hikers to carry and drink plentiful water, use sun protection, avoid the hottest hours, wear appropriate footwear and leave an itinerary with a trusted person. Mobile reception can be unreliable across remote washes and mountain routes.

Before heading out

  • Check the park’s current advisories, rather than relying on old trail reviews.
  • Confirm any required vehicle day-use fee at the specific destination.
  • Choose a route that matches the group’s ability and the day’s conditions.
  • Carry water and a paper or offline map; never bypass a road-closure sign.
