BURNEY, California — Visitors planning an autumn trip to McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park should distinguish between the summer parking-reservation pilot and ongoing safety restrictions on individual trails. They are two separate things, and the official park notices answer both questions.

Summer reservations ended September 27

According to California State Parks’ 2026 reservation announcement, the park’s advance day-use reservation pilot applied to Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and specified holidays from May 15 through September 27, 2026. The same published schedule marks October through December as no-reservation-needed months. That does not waive the normal day-use vehicle entry fee or guarantee entry if the parking area reaches capacity.

The park’s official visitor page lists day-use hours of 8 a.m. to sunset and a $10 per-vehicle day-use fee. Off-season entry procedures differ from summer; State Parks notes an automated payment machine near the visitor center when the entrance kiosk is closed.

Two trail closures still appear in the park’s notices

A separate State Parks trail advisory identifies erosion damage to the Burney Creek Trail between the Rainbow Bridge intersection with Falls Loop Trail and the Rim Trail, and the PSEA Trail between Rainbow Bridge and PSEA Camp. The agency tells visitors traveling on foot toward the Lake Britton picnic area to use the Rim Trail instead. These closures affect named trail segments — not the entire state park.

Dogs, weather and practical preparations

The park allows dogs in parking areas, along paved roadways and in campgrounds, but not on trails or day-use areas, according to its posted rules. Do not plan a waterfall hike with a pet based on another California park’s leash policies. Fall and winter weather at higher elevations can become colder and wetter than nearby lower valleys, so bring layers and watch for changing conditions.

  • Check both reservation guidance and trail notices before driving.
  • Carry a payment method and be prepared for the regular entrance fee.
  • Never cross signed erosion closures or damaged trail barriers.
  • Plan to arrive during park hours and respect parking-capacity restrictions.
  • For questions, State Parks lists 530-335-2777.
