CALIFORNIA — October 17, 2026. A county shaded red on a preparedness map does not mean your street is under evacuation. California residents need address-specific emergency alerts and current incident information. This guide explains the difference between an advance deployment, a reported wildfire and an evacuation order.
First: confirm whether there is an actual incident
CAL FIRE’s incident listings provide named wildfires, locations and time-stamped agency updates. Some incidents are managed by federal or local agencies and may have additional official information elsewhere. A map of firefighters staged ahead of windy weather is not an incident perimeter.
Second: check evacuation zones for your address
Use your county sheriff, emergency management office or county alert provider for orders and warnings. An evacuation order is not the same as an evacuation warning. Boundaries can change rapidly. If an official order covers your address, follow the responsible authority immediately.
Third: check roads separately
Caltrans QuickMap covers state highway conditions and closures; local streets may be managed by cities or counties. Do not assume a reopened highway means an evacuation area or hiking trail has reopened.
Fourth: check smoke and the forecast
AirNow reports air quality conditions and forecasts, while the National Weather Service issues weather warnings, including Red Flag Warnings. A Red Flag Warning indicates dangerous fire weather, not necessarily a fire already burning at your address.
Fifth: prepare for power and communication disruptions
Keep essential medicines, water, identification and a way to receive alerts ready. Download offline maps and identify more than one evacuation route if local officials recommend it. Never use an old news article as a live evacuation instruction.
