CHICO, BUTTE COUNTY — OCTOBER 18, 2026. California State Parks is inviting Chico residents and other interested community members to a free public open house Sunday, October 25, focused on the future of Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park after a fire seriously damaged the historic building in December 2024.
When and where to attend
- Date: Sunday, October 25, 2026.
- Time: 2:30–5:00 p.m.; opening remarks at approximately 3:00 p.m. and a closing presentation at 4:30 p.m.
- Venue: Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park Visitor Center, 525 Esplanade, Chico, CA 95926.
- Admission: Free.
- Registration: RSVP recommended but not required, according to State Parks.
The format is an open house rather than a single presentation: visitors may come and go during the advertised window, see exhibits, speak with staff and share views about planning options.
What will be discussed?
The meeting is part of the state’s Reimagine Bidwell Mansion initiative. State Parks says its team will present survey results, planning alternatives and an updated roadmap for recovery and future construction. The program will also reflect perspectives from the Mechoopda Indian Tribe of Chico Rancheria, as well as input gathered through community events and stakeholder discussions.
The agency began the engagement initiative in September 2025 after the December 11, 2024 fire caused extensive damage to the landmark. The planning effort is expected to produce a vision plan weighing community, tribal and stakeholder input against technical feasibility and existing conditions. The meeting is therefore an opportunity to learn about options under consideration, not an announcement that one finished reconstruction plan has already been approved.
Can residents participate without attending?
Yes, to a degree. State Parks says materials shown at the open house will remain on display at the park’s visitor center for several weeks afterward. Anyone planning a separate visit should verify the visitor center’s current public hours and how feedback can be submitted.
Questions residents may want to ask
- Which alternatives are being studied for preserving or restoring the damaged historic structure?
- How are the building’s historic significance and cultural perspectives reflected in the planning?
- What site-safety, cost, engineering or preservation constraints remain unresolved?
- How will community feedback shape the vision plan, and when will the next decision points occur?
- Where can residents obtain the survey summaries or track subsequent public meetings?
Why the process matters
Bidwell Mansion is an important part of Chico’s cultural landscape. Decisions about the future of the damaged structure will affect public interpretation, historic preservation and how residents and visitors experience the site. The open house offers a way to ask questions before planning advances further.
