CALIFORNIA58 RELOCATION GUIDE | Updated October 26, 2026. A move into California can trigger deadlines for driver licensing and for registering a vehicle from another state. These are separate processes, and the DMV’s residency rules matter more than the date printed on a moving contract.

California driver licensing

The DMV states that a person who becomes a California resident must get a California driver’s license within 10 days if driving here. Residency can be evidenced by work, school, housing and other circumstances. Temporary visitors may be in a different legal position. Check the DMV’s instructions about identification, testing and required documents before scheduling an appointment.

Registering an out-of-state vehicle

The DMV’s new-resident portal says that a vehicle brought into the state must generally be registered within 20 days of becoming a resident or bringing it into California, depending on the applicable circumstances. A car may need to satisfy California emissions rules, and ownership paperwork can affect what the office needs.

Avoid a gap in coverage

Arrange valid California insurance for the garaging address and vehicle use. Review the renewal date, requirements and registration fees through official channels rather than relying on a third-party estimate. An address change filed with USPS does not update a DMV record.
