CALIFORNIA58 FAMILY & EDUCATION GUIDE — October 26, 2026. Before moving to a California neighborhood, do not assume the school nearest the house is the school a child will attend. The California Department of Education explains that local district governing boards determine general school-boundary and transfer policies, and state law does not guarantee attendance at the nearest neighborhood school.

Why the address matters

Postal city names, municipal boundaries and school districts are not necessarily the same. A nearby school may be across a district or attendance-area line. Within a district, different grades or specialized educational programs can have separate assignment rules, and a school can face capacity constraints.

How families should verify

Begin with the full street address and contact the relevant school district directly. Ask for the governing attendance boundaries for the intended grade and academic year, any open-enrollment options, transportation rules, required registration documents and deadlines. A real-estate advertisement or school-rating website is not official enrollment confirmation.

What if a different school is preferred?

California’s education department has separate guidance on intradistrict and interdistrict transfers. Those policies are administered by local governing boards, and eligible families may need to apply under specific procedures. Do not terminate an existing school placement on the assumption that a desired transfer will be approved.

Where official maps help

The state’s 2025–26 district boundary dataset can provide a geographic starting point, but the local district remains the authority on assignments. The CDE school boundary FAQ expressly directs parents to district administrators.
