CALIFORNIA58 PUBLIC-SERVICE GUIDE — Updated October 25, 2026. If you need groceries or a free meal in California, start with your ZIP code and a source that can connect you to nearby distribution sites. Food assistance is available through several different systems, but a food bank’s listed headquarters is not necessarily the place where you can pick up groceries. Schedules, eligibility, delivery areas and required documents vary, so verify the specific pantry or meal site before traveling.

1. Find a food bank serving your ZIP code

Feeding America’s official food locator accepts ZIP codes and identifies a regional food bank in its network. That food bank can direct you to partner food pantries, mobile distributions or meal programs. A regional food bank may operate a warehouse rather than a public walk-in pantry; use its distribution directory or call for the actual location and times.

The California Association of Food Banks also provides statewide food-help guidance and explains how to contact local providers. Its page points people who need immediate help toward 211 and local food bank networks.

2. Contact 211 for local food and social services

Dial 2-1-1 where service is available, or use 211 California’s county-by-county directory to find a regional provider. Local 211 organizations can help identify food programs and other services such as housing assistance and community resources. Phone and online coverage differ across counties; if 211 does not connect in your location, the statewide directory has alternatives. For ZIP-based call routing, 211 California also lists 866-346-3211.

3. Check California’s official food-bank list

The California Department of Social Services food-bank directory names participating food-bank organizations by county. It includes programs distributing USDA commodities to eligible people in their service areas. Those government-funded programs can have residence and income rules; they should not be confused with every nonprofit pantry’s own eligibility standards. Contact the listed organization for the distribution site rather than assuming its administrative address accepts walk-in visitors.

4. Explore CalFresh for ongoing grocery support

CalFresh helps eligible households buy food using benefits accepted by participating stores. It differs from a pantry or prepared-meal program and requires an application and eligibility review. The California Association of Food Banks directs residents to the official CalFresh process and gives the county assistance number 1-877-847-3663. Eligibility, immigration considerations and documentation depend on circumstances; rely on the current agency instructions, not assumptions from a third-party checklist.

What to check before leaving home

  • Exact pickup location: a food bank warehouse and a partner pantry may have different addresses.
  • Hours and distribution dates: mobile and pop-up sites can move or change their calendars.
  • Eligibility or registration: ask about service-area, household and program requirements; do not assume all providers use the same rules.
  • Transportation and accessibility: ask about delivery options, language access and what to bring, particularly in remote areas.
