Lassen Volcanic National Park combines volcanic peaks, hydrothermal areas, mountain lakes, forests and a high-elevation park road in northeastern California. Snow can shape access for much of the year.

Before you go

Check current park alerts, road-opening status, snow conditions, wildfire information and weather. Seasonal access can change quickly and some areas remain snow-covered long after lower elevations have warmed.

Hydrothermal areas

The park contains boiling springs, steam vents and other hydrothermal features. Stay on designated trails and boardwalks. Ground around thermal features can be thin and dangerously hot.

Roads and seasonal access

The main park highway is a high-elevation route and is not guaranteed to be fully open year-round. Spring snow removal can take time, while early storms may affect access again in fall.

Hiking, lakes and camping

Visitors use the park for hiking, camping, lake recreation, stargazing and winter activities. Campground availability, trail conditions and snow hazards vary strongly by season.

Wildfire and smoke

Fire conditions can affect air quality, trails and road access. Verify current incidents and closures rather than relying on conditions from earlier in the week.
