California58 is being built as a statewide civic-information, public-service and local-news platform with one geographic promise: all 58 California counties belong in the same information system.

The project is designed around a simple public-interest problem. Important California information is distributed across state agencies, county governments, hundreds of cities, emergency systems, public databases and thousands of separate webpages. Residents should not need to understand government structure before they can find the information they need.

Closing information gaps across 58 counties

California58 connects statewide information with county, city and community context. The goal is not to concentrate only on Los Angeles, the Bay Area and Sacramento, but to build a useful statewide layer that also includes rural counties, small communities, inland regions, mountain areas, the North Coast and the deserts.

County-by-county architecture makes it possible to connect original stories, government services, emergency information, transportation, parks, business resources and practical guides to the correct local context.

Original journalism with public-service value

California58 News publishes original, fact-based California coverage with emphasis on state and local matters of public interest. Official-source updates are rewritten with original context rather than copied as press releases. Stories can be connected to counties, topics and practical resources so readers can understand not only what happened, but why it matters and where to verify it.

Automation and AI tools may assist research, drafting, translation, data organization or imagery, but automatically assisted newsroom stories are disclosed and remain subject to California58 sourcing, correction and editorial standards.

Information equity and multilingual access

Language should not determine whether a Californian can understand a public-service page. California58 is developing quality-controlled language editions rather than silently mixing English material into pages marked as another language. The platform is also built mobile-first because many people reach local news, emergency information and government services primarily through a phone.

Live and practical public information

California58 already connects or is actively building public-facing layers for weather alerts, earthquakes, road conditions, power outages, live public cameras, California laws, state holidays, official California apps and tools, national parks, county information and practical California Life guides.

These layers prioritize authoritative government and primary sources. California58 is independent and does not replace the responsible agency for official transactions, emergency orders or eligibility decisions.

Transparency and trust infrastructure

California58 publicly maintains editorial standards, sources and corrections information, ownership transparency, accessibility commitments and a clear separation between editorial information, advertising and affiliated commercial services.

Advertising and affiliated resources can support sustainability, but they do not determine independent editorial conclusions. Government information and free official options should remain clearly identifiable.

What community impact should be measurable

As the platform grows, California58 intends to measure progress through practical indicators: counties with completed coverage, original stories published, public-source guides maintained, languages fully quality-checked, rural and underserved communities covered, corrections handled, accessibility improvements completed and usage of civic and emergency resources.

How grant or philanthropic support would be used

External support could accelerate work that has clear public value: hiring and compensating journalists, deeper rural and underserved-community coverage, multilingual reporting and translation review, accessibility, public-records and data work, emergency-information infrastructure, community listening, county-level civic reporting, and the technical systems required to maintain reliable statewide information.

Funding relationships would be disclosed when appropriate and would not purchase favorable editorial coverage.

A statewide public-information experiment

California58 is testing whether one independent platform can make a very large state easier to understand by connecting journalism, official information, local geography and practical action in one system. The long-term standard is simple: a resident in a small county should be able to find useful, trustworthy California information as easily as a resident of the state’s largest cities.
