BUTTE COUNTY, California — October 29, 2026. California State Parks has filed an environmental notice for accessibility work along the Indian Fishery Nature Trail at Bidwell–Sacramento River State Park, near Chico. The October 28, 2026 filing describes improvements to the existing trail, seating, parking and wayfinding without converting the site into an entirely new recreational development.
What trail improvements are proposed?
The state plans to reconstruct and raise portions of the existing trail with edging to improve the walking surface. Two drainage features would help move floodwater through the corridor without damaging the trail. The project also includes connections from the trail to picnic areas.
What amenities will change?
According to the official notice, workers would construct four pads to relocate two existing benches and two existing picnic tables, create a 20-by-20-foot accessible parking stall, and install two informational or directional signs. Materials for the pads may include concrete or decomposed granite. These are described as accessibility enhancements to existing public-use areas.
Where is the site?
The agency places the project in the northern part of Bidwell–Sacramento River State Park near West Sacramento Avenue and River Road, along the Sacramento River near Chico. Some park sections can have different access conditions after storms, so visitors should not infer that every path will be open during construction.
Does filing mean the improvements are finished?
No. A Notice of Exemption documents environmental review of planned work. It does not supply a verified reopening date, contractor schedule or completed ADA inspection. Visitors who depend on accessible parking or a continuous accessible route should contact the park before traveling.
Why it matters
Accessible nature trails allow more people to experience river landscapes, including visitors who use mobility devices, families with strollers and older residents. Effective drainage also matters in low-lying river environments. The state cites exemptions for maintenance, replacement and minor accessibility-related alterations.
