BIG SUR, Calif. — Highway 1 will be fully closed overnight in Big Sur from 11 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, until 5 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, according to Caltrans District 5.

The closure is at Post Mile 44.3, just north of Nepenthe in Monterey County. This is a full closure rather than one-way traffic control, so drivers will not be able to pass through the work zone during those hours.

Why the highway is closing

Crews will repair a drainage structure that crosses beneath both lanes. Caltrans says electronic message signs will warn travelers in advance and the work is expected to be complete Friday morning.

What drivers should do

  • Pass through the area before 11 p.m. or choose a different route in advance.
  • Check Caltrans QuickMap immediately before departure.
  • Do not rely on unverified local-road detours.
  • Slow down and follow all work-zone signs and instructions.

Travelers should also plan for other major California transportation projects when building longer statewide itineraries.
