BIG SUR, Monterey County — California State Parks announced that Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park will reopen Friday, October 16, 2026, following a temporary closure during the Timber Fire. The department said the fire burned approximately 517 acres within the park and affected many trails.

What is scheduled to reopen?

According to the department’s October 9 announcement, visitors can again use major day-use areas and the campground starting October 16. The park served as an emergency incident command location and base for firefighting operations after the fire began August 8.

Why trail-by-trail checking still matters

Reopening the park entrance does not mean every trail, bridge or slope is safe. Fire-damaged trees, unstable ground and ongoing restoration can create hazards after a large incident. Before planning a hike, consult the official park page for trail notices, posted closures and current campground conditions. Never bypass barriers or enter an area marked unsafe.

Camping and Highway 1

Campground availability is not guaranteed by a reopening announcement. Visitors should use ReserveCalifornia to check dates and fees, and verify state highway conditions separately through Caltrans QuickMap. A campground reservation does not override road closures or emergency restrictions.

What this means for Big Sur

The return of visitors supports regional recreation after the emergency response, but recovery and monitoring may continue. Residents and travelers should distinguish the scheduled October 16 reopening from confirmation that a specific facility is operating at the moment they arrive.
