California voters have several ways to rescue a ballot problem before and after the November 3, 2026 general election. A missing ballot, a damaged envelope or a signature that does not match county records does not automatically mean a voter has lost the chance to participate. But the remedies have different deadlines, and county election offices handle the details.

Your ballot never arrived — or it was damaged

Every active registered California voter should have been sent a vote-by-mail ballot. Counties were required to begin mailing ballots by October 5. If yours has not arrived, check your voter record and contact your county elections office rather than relying on an unofficial replacement form or social-media advice.

The Secretary of State identifies October 27 as the recommended date to request a replacement ballot, not as a universal cutoff after which every option disappears. You may request a replacement through your county office and review the official replacement ballot application. Depending on local arrangements, the county may also assist by telephone, email or another permitted method.

Check the ballot’s status before Election Day

California’s official Where’s My Ballot? service lets enrolled voters receive status updates by text, email or voice call. It can alert you when a ballot is mailed, received, counted or needs attention. To check registration information, use My Voter Status.

Do not assume a ballot was counted merely because it was placed in a mailbox or drop box. Watch for official county communications and check the available tracking information.

Return the ballot correctly

Sign and seal the official return envelope. A ballot delivered personally to an authorized polling location, vote center, ballot drop box or elections office must be returned by 8 p.m. on November 3. A mailed ballot generally must be postmarked no later than November 3 and received by the county elections office no later than November 10.

The state recommends mailing early to reduce delivery and postmark risk. If mailing on Election Day, ask a postal employee inside a U.S. Post Office for a manual postmark. Find official in-person options at California Early Voting; hours and locations differ by county.

What if you forgot to sign — or the signatures do not match?

County elections officials compare the return-envelope signature with the signature information on file. When the envelope is unsigned or a signature cannot be matched, the voter must be given a chance to correct the problem under state rules. County officials may notify voters through the mail, phone, email or ballot-tracking alerts.

For the November 3 general election, a completed signature-correction statement must reach the county elections office by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25, 2026. This is a deadline for correcting eligible envelope-signature problems, not an extension of the normal ballot return deadline.

Use the Secretary of State’s Verify My Signature page to select your county and follow that county’s approved submission instructions. The required form and permitted delivery methods may vary.

If you missed the October 19 registration deadline

California’s standard online voter-registration deadline passed on October 19. Eligible people who still need to register or update their registration may use conditional, same-day registration at a county elections office or an eligible in-person voting location through November 3. Confirm where this service is offered before traveling.

Three dates worth saving

  • October 27: state-recommended date to request a replacement mailed ballot.
  • November 3, 8 p.m.: deadline to return a ballot in person; mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day.
  • November 25, 5 p.m.: deadline for the county to receive an applicable signature-correction statement.

What this means for residents: Do not wait until Election Day to resolve a missing ballot. Verify your county’s process, save copies of correspondence when appropriate and use the official ballot-tracking service.
