LOS ANGELES — October 18, 2026. Drivers traveling through the Sepulveda Pass next weekend should prepare for fewer lanes and ramp closures on Interstate 405. Caltrans District 7 has scheduled extended weekend work from 10 p.m. Friday, October 23, through 5 a.m. Monday, October 26, 2026, affecting a heavily used connection between the San Fernando Valley and West Los Angeles.

The transportation agency says southbound I-405 will be reduced to three lanes between Ventura Boulevard and Mulholland Drive. Work is subject to weather and operational changes; this notice is a schedule, not a live traffic report.

Exactly what is affected?

Caltrans identifies the following ramps in its October notice:

  • Ventura Boulevard on-ramp to southbound I-405: planned closure.
  • Southbound I-405 exit toward Valley Vista Boulevard/Sepulveda Boulevard: planned closure.
  • Valley Vista Boulevard/Sepulveda Boulevard entrance to southbound I-405: planned closure.
  • Northbound I-405 off-ramp to Getty Center Drive: also listed as a planned closure.

Although Caltrans states that northbound I-405 through-lane reductions are not expected, it separately lists the Getty Center Drive off-ramp closure. Motorists should not confuse “northbound lanes unaffected” with a promise that every northbound ramp remains open.

Why the lane reductions are happening

According to the agency, this is part of its I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, covering the Sepulveda Pass corridor between Van Nuys and Westwood. The agency puts the project’s improvement budget at about $143.7 million and says the work is intended to extend pavement life and improve traffic safety and mobility. These figures describe the broader project, not the isolated cost of the October 23–26 weekend closure.

Practical advice for nearby residents and businesses

People near work zones may experience overnight noise, vibration, dust and altered routes to local streets. Drivers going to Los Angeles International Airport, Westwood, UCLA or destinations across the pass should allow extra time, but a specific travel delay cannot be predicted in advance without live conditions. Highway congestion can change after crews set up traffic control.

Transit may be an alternative for some trips, depending on origin, destination and weekend service levels. Review the route and service alerts for your actual trip before choosing a different way to travel.

Two checks before starting your trip

  1. Open Caltrans QuickMap for real-time agency traffic and closure reporting. Select the appropriate incident and lane-closure layers.
  2. Read Caltrans’ October project notice for any rescheduling. The agency can change its listed operations for weather, safety or logistical reasons.

What changes for residents?

The most direct effects are a scheduled reduction in southbound through lanes, specified ramp closures, possible local construction noise, and longer trips at peak periods. Drivers should verify conditions instead of relying on a screenshot that may reflect a different October weekend.
