The California Local News Fellowship opened applications for California host newsrooms on November 5, 2026, offering reporting and editing placements intended to strengthen local coverage, particularly in communities underserved by existing media.

According to the Fellowship Team’s November 5 announcement, applications opened at 10 a.m. Pacific and will close December 2, 2026, at 6 p.m. Pacific. The program’s official newsroom application page confirms the November 5–December 2 window.

California58 has a personal connection to the program: Vitaly Ataev Troshin, editor and founder of California58 and its network of local California news editions, was a member of the inaugural 2023–2025 cohort. Berkeley’s official alumni directory lists his fellowship placement at Slavic Sacramento.

Two opportunities for participating newsrooms

The program expects to place approximately 35 reporting fellows for the 2027–2029 cohort. It also plans up to five editing fellowships, each lasting one year, in partnership with the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education.

The current application round is for news organizations seeking to host fellows. It is separate from the application process for individual journalists. The Newsroom FAQ says journalist applications will open in early 2027, with newsroom selection planned for January and placements beginning in early September. Reporting placements are scheduled to end in August 2029; editing placements in August 2028.

What the program is looking for

The Fellowship Team is asking newsrooms to demonstrate original local reporting, an understanding of their audiences’ information needs and a commitment to professional journalistic ethics. Applicants should explain which underserved communities they reach and provide a concrete plan for the fellow’s assignment, supervision and professional support.

For a small newsroom, that means more than identifying a coverage gap. The proposal should show who will edit the fellow’s work and how the newsroom will help the journalist report responsibly in the community.

Dates, information sessions and application links

The following schedule was supplied in the Fellowship Team’s November 5 announcement. All times are Pacific Standard Time.

Newsrooms should review the official FAQ before using the application portal linked by the program. Questions can be sent to cafellows@berkeley.edu.

Hosting also requires a newsroom commitment

The FAQ says the program covers fellows’ salaries and benefits, while host newsrooms provide supervision, equipment and reporting support. It currently lists annual newsroom contributions of $5,000 for organizations with 1–10 full-time-equivalent staff, $15,000 for 11–20 and $25,000 for 20 or more. Because the published staffing bands overlap at 20, newsrooms at that boundary should confirm the applicable contribution with program staff.

Disclosure: California58’s editor and founder, Vitaly Ataev Troshin, participated in the fellowship’s first cohort. His fellowship placement was at Slavic Sacramento. This alumni connection is disclosed for transparency and does not indicate that California58 has been selected as a host newsroom for the new cohort.
