SACRAMENTO, California — October 14, 2026. California residents planning to vote in the November 3 general election have until Monday, October 19 to complete regular voter registration. But missing that deadline does not automatically mean missing the election: eligible residents can still use California’s Same Day Voter Registration, also known as conditional voter registration, at approved in-person voting locations through Election Day.
Register or verify your voter status by October 19
The California Secretary of State lists October 19 as the regular registration deadline for this election. Eligible voters can register or update their information through California Online Voter Registration, and check an existing registration at My Voter Status.
Voters who have moved, changed their name or are unsure about their current registration should review their records before the deadline. Official voter quick facts describe the available options.
Missed October 19? Conditional registration is available
The state’s Same Day Voter Registration process permits eligible people who missed the regular deadline to conditionally register and cast a ballot at an appropriate county elections office, polling place or vote center between October 20 and November 3. Election workers must verify eligibility before counting a conditionally registered voter’s ballot.
Locations and opening dates depend on the county. Do not assume that every location opens on October 20: check the official conditional-registration instructions and your county elections office before traveling.
When are polls open? How should mail ballots be returned?
Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Counties began mailing vote-by-mail ballots by October 5; official ballot drop boxes and early-voting locations have their own published schedules.
The Secretary of State recommends returning vote-by-mail ballots promptly. If sending a ballot through the mail, make sure it is postmarked on or before November 3; state officials advise allowing at least seven days for mailing when possible. If mailing close to Election Day, ask a postal employee for a manual postmark. Alternatively, use a designated official drop-off location by the applicable deadline.
See the state’s complete November 2026 election calendar for registration, early voting, deadlines and ballot-return guidance.
Check the candidates and measures for your own address
The same statewide races and 14 propositions appear throughout California, but city, county, school board, special-district and some legislative contests depend on where a voter lives. Neighboring communities can have different ballots. Use the official sample ballot from your county elections office for the definitive local candidate and measure list.
