Channel Islands National Park protects five islands and surrounding marine ecosystems off the Southern California coast. Unlike a drive-up national park, visiting usually requires advance transportation planning by boat or, in limited circumstances, air service.

Before you go

Check the National Park Service for current island access, weather, sea conditions, closures and safety notices. Boat schedules and landing conditions can change, and services on the islands are limited.

Transportation and access

Most visitors reach the park through authorized boat transportation departing from the Ventura area. There are no bridges or vehicle ferries to the park islands. Travelers should bring the food, water, clothing and other supplies recommended for the specific island and trip.

Camping and day trips

Some islands offer camping, but reservations and transportation must be coordinated carefully. Day trips can involve hiking, wildlife viewing, kayaking, snorkeling or simply exploring coastal and island landscapes. Conditions vary significantly between islands.

Safety

Wind, waves, cold water, sun exposure and limited services are important considerations. Cell service can be unreliable. Follow official guidance for marine conditions, wildlife, fire restrictions and emergency planning.

Accessibility and pets

Island terrain, boat boarding and remote facilities can present accessibility challenges. Check the park’s current accessibility information before booking. Pets are generally restricted within national park areas, so verify current rules before travel.
