DUNSMUIR, California — Castle Crags State Park, about six miles south of Dunsmuir, offers a dramatic introduction to the granite formations of the upper Sacramento River region. Visitors do not have to commit to a difficult all-day summit hike to see the park’s landscape.

A shorter viewpoint option

The California State Parks accessibility guide identifies the Vista Point Trail as an approximately 0.25-mile accessible trail in each direction. It leads to a viewpoint with sights of Castle Crags, Mount Shasta and Gray Rocks. The agency lists a compacted-soil trail surface, with accessible picnic tables, a bench and interpretive information at the overlook. Trail conditions can change after rain or maintenance work, so the published accessibility measurements should be checked against current conditions.

Other routes, including trails climbing toward the rocky crags, are considerably more strenuous. The official 2026 park trail information sheet compares Vista Point, Root Creek and longer hikes, including distance, elevation change and pet access.

Park hours, fees and campground information

The park’s current visitor page lists day-use hours from 8 a.m. to sunset and a posted $8 vehicle day-use fee, with special rates or changes possible. Camping is currently described as first come, first served, with self-registration and ranger payment checks. Never infer that an individual campsite is vacant from a generic website listing.

Directions: the entrance is at 20022 Castle Creek Road, Castella, accessed from Interstate 5 Exit 724. The park is also a jumping-off point for Sacramento River access and viewpoints. The published contact number is 530-235-2684.

One rule dog owners should know

State Parks permits dogs in parking lots, along paved roadways and in campgrounds, but not on hiking trails or in day-use areas. Visitors with pets should plan accordingly. The accessible viewpoint trail and the picnic/campground areas do not all follow the same dog rules.

Before leaving Dunsmuir

  • Confirm current park notices, trail closures, fire restrictions and payment requirements.
  • Dress in layers — fall and winter weather in the region changes quickly.
  • Use the short Vista Point Trail for a brief outing, rather than assuming every route suits every visitor.
  • Pack drinking water, follow posted signs and do not climb unstable rock faces.
  • Check whether a dog is permitted on the exact area or trail you intend to visit.
