DUNSMUIR NEWS | LOCAL REPORTING · 2026

The City of Dunsmuir entered the planning stage of a project examining septic-to-sewer connections and improvements to its existing wastewater lift station network. A state environmental notice filed March 23, 2026 describes studies, data collection, environmental documentation and draft construction plans before any larger infrastructure work can begin.

What is being evaluated

The city’s Lift Station and Sewer Collections Improvement Project involves studying future conversions from onsite septic systems to the municipal sewer system, as well as upgrades to existing lift stations. The filed work concerns planning and engineering information, rather than a contract already installing new lines or pumps.

Where future infrastructure could be considered

The CEQA record identifies First Street, Gill Avenue, Bear Creek, Mican and Fourth Street in its location information. It covers approximately five acres in the Dunsmuir area along the Sacramento River corridor. The listing is not a final map of every property to be connected and does not state that each household in those areas will necessarily join the system.

Why the planning-only exemption matters

The notice specifically relies on the CEQA statutory exemption for feasibility and planning studies. It states that this phase will not include significant ground-disturbing activities or actual construction. Residents should therefore distinguish an approved engineering study from a future city council decision to build, finance or operate new sewer infrastructure.

Questions for utility customers

Local customers may want to know which lift stations need repair, whether any septic connection program is voluntary, the expected capital cost and future rate implications. Those answers require feasibility findings and adopted budgets that are not contained in the March filing. Dunsmuir News will monitor project documents and corrections submitted by local readers.
