HAMILTON CITY, Glenn County — Residents following Sacramento River outdoor recreation and conservation projects should be aware of a partial trail restriction at the Ord Bend unit of the Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge, upstream from Hamilton City.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conditions notice, dated September 22, 2026, says the western side of the Main Hiking Trail where it crosses a levee is closed during pipe replacement work. Other Ord Bend trails were described as open in that update.

Is the entire refuge closed?

No. The posted notice concerns a portion of a trail in one unit. It does not declare that all Sacramento River refuge lands are closed. Travelers should check individual unit information and posted signs rather than assume any nearby path leads through the construction zone.

The agency warns people to avoid the work area and to follow safety fencing, signage and flags. Even apparently minor pipe replacement can require heavy machinery, excavations and controlled areas that are unsafe for casual entry.

How to check accessible routes

The Sacramento refuge complex maps identify visitor areas, trails and other public facilities across the system. Not every refuge unit is open to pedestrians, cyclists or motorists on the same terms.

In addition, some Sacramento Valley wetland access areas have seasonal limits. The FWS asks visitors to consult the current visitor guidance and remain on marked routes.

Why Hamilton City residents should follow river projects

The Sacramento River corridor connects natural habitats, floodplain management and public recreation throughout Glenn and Butte counties. Projects affecting levees and visitor trails can change where people safely walk, fish, or observe wildlife, even if the work is not directly inside Hamilton City.

The FWS update also cautions that riverfront roads and soft shoulders can be hazardous following high water and that temporary closures can occur without advance notice. The agency is the source of day-to-day rules and project updates.
