Interstate 5 at the Yolo Bypass is under a series of full overnight closures through Nov. 20, with northbound work scheduled first and southbound closures following in November. The project may affect Sacramento International Airport trips, especially for drivers approaching from Woodland.

The closure schedule

Caltrans District 3 says crews are removing and replacing pavement on I-5 at the Yolo Bypass north of the Sacramento River and Sacramento International Airport. Only one direction is scheduled to close at a time:

  • Northbound I-5: 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. nightly, Oct. 11 through Oct. 31.
  • Southbound I-5: 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. nightly, Nov. 1 through Nov. 20.

The schedule can change because of weather, equipment, materials or other construction conditions. Drivers should check Caltrans QuickMap shortly before leaving.

Detours and delays

County Road 22 is the signed detour for local traffic. Caltrans urges commercial truck drivers to use State Route 113 to Interstate 80 instead. Delays and longer travel times are expected.

The work-zone speed limit is reduced to 55 mph, and the California Highway Patrol will be present for enforcement.

What Sacramento airport travelers should know

Caltrans says the northbound closure should not delay the public from making scheduled departures at Sacramento International Airport. The later southbound closure is more likely to affect airport-bound drivers coming from the Woodland area, so those travelers should allow extra time.

Travelers elsewhere in California can also review California58’s San Marcos SR-78 overnight closure guide and the site’s collection of official California travel and service tools.

Before you leave

  • Check QuickMap for the latest closure status.
  • Add extra time instead of relying on a normal navigation estimate.
  • Commercial trucks should follow the SR-113/I-80 recommendation.
  • Use County Road 22 only as directed for local traffic.
  • Slow to the posted work-zone limit and follow all temporary signs.
