MARIN AND SONOMA COUNTIES — November 5, 2026. In the race for California State Assembly District 12, Jackie Elward has an unofficial lead over Eric Lucan, with 54,512 votes (56.6%) to 41,713 (43.3%). The margin is 12,799 votes in the November 4, 4:13 p.m. results shown by KQED using Associated Press data. The AP estimated roughly 48.69% of the vote counted at that snapshot; this is an estimate, not county certification.

Which communities does District 12 include?

The district contains all of Marin County and about two-thirds of Sonoma County, including communities in the North Bay. The two candidates are Democrats: Elward is a Rohnert Park councilmember and Lucan is a Marin County supervisor. The open seat became available because incumbent Damon Connolly sought a State Senate seat.

Campaign debate and spending

CalMatters describes the race as involving competing labor and business priorities. Outside expenditure groups spent heavily in support of candidates, raising questions about who funds campaign communications and how candidates distinguish themselves from independent groups. Such expenditures do not themselves establish how any elected member would vote in the Legislature.

Why the count is not final

Although the snapshot shows a large lead, November 4 data are not the certified result. Additional mail and provisional votes may be processed, and separate county subtotals can change. Both counties will complete their canvasses before the state certifies legislative elections.
