CALIFORNIA58 CALIFORNIA LIVING GUIDE — Reviewed October 26, 2026. An interstate move brings a series of deadlines and decisions. The following ten tasks help people organize the first weeks without assuming every agency uses the same residency definition.
Identity and transportation
1. Determine your residency status for each relevant program rather than relying on one universal test. 2. If you will drive, consult California DMV instructions about obtaining the appropriate license. 3. If you brought a vehicle, review the DMV’s 20-day registration rule and the inspection or documentation requirements for that vehicle.
Housing and bills
4. Confirm utility accounts, deposits and rates at the exact address. 5. Document the move-in condition and read the lease or closing papers. 6. Review renters or homeowners insurance and investigate separate catastrophe coverage as needed.
Family and health
7. Confirm healthcare enrollment rules and the provider network before assuming doctors transfer. 8. Contact the actual school district about enrollment and transportation if children are involved.
Records and local information
9. Update your address with financial institutions, licensing bodies and other agencies that require it; U.S. Postal Service forwarding alone does not update every record. 10. Save emergency alerts, know the city or county providing services and bookmark official agendas and local reporting.
Avoid the biggest mistake
Do not treat one checklist as legal advice or proof of eligibility. School districts, DMV, tax authorities and healthcare programs have their own rules and deadlines. Consult each agency’s current guidance.
