CALIFORNIA58 RELOCATION GUIDE | October 26, 2026. A smaller California community can offer more space and a different pace of life, but those benefits do not automatically mean a home is ready for full-time remote work. Before moving, verify the infrastructure that your employer, customers or family will depend on.
Broadband claims need address-level verification
California’s CPUC Broadband Mapping Program provides reported speeds and provider availability, but the map is based on periodically collected information. A provider’s advertised coverage in a ZIP code does not establish that a specific rural parcel can be connected. Ask the provider for a written service qualification, installation fees, maximum upload speed, data caps and realistic installation date. Test mobile internet as a backup rather than assuming it will work.
Power and climate are part of the calculation
Consider local outage history, the availability of a safe backup power solution, summer cooling costs and whether heavy weather or wildfires can affect roads and utilities. A home office should have contingency plans for meetings, client deadlines and emergency alerts. Any generator or battery installation must comply with safety and applicable building requirements.
Services and travel still matter
Compare distance to a pharmacy, primary care clinic, urgent care, grocery store and reliable shipping facility. For families, verify school transportation, childcare options and after-school schedules. Frequent trips to a distant metro area can erase part of the apparent housing savings.
How to compare two locations
- Check the exact addresses in the CPUC map.
- Request two separate installation or qualification quotes when possible.
- Test phone calls and upload speeds inside the home.
- Estimate a full month’s electricity, transport, internet and insurance expenses.
- Visit during ordinary working hours and assess noise, safety and access.
- Read local government notices and follow community coverage through California58’s newspapers.
The strongest choice is not necessarily the cheapest advertised address; it is the location where housing costs, work reliability and essential services fit together. Official source: CPUC invitation for resident feedback on broadband availability, February 10, 2026.
