RANCHO CORDOVA, CALIFORNIA — October 18, 2026. California’s Farm to School initiative now reports 375 funded projects and $86 million in grants, according to a state announcement issued October 16. Government officials, farmers, cooks and school nutrition leaders gathered at Soil Born Farms in Rancho Cordova to discuss getting more California-grown food into school meals and expanding the market for local growers.
This is separate from the state’s universal school meals program, which serves free breakfast and lunch to California public school students. The $86 million in Farm to School grants is not the cost of all free meals served statewide; it refers to a set of competitive grants to school systems, producers and their partners.
What the state says it has accomplished
The governor’s office reported that 4.2 million public school students have benefited from funded Farm to School projects, with 80% of funded incubator grantees at Title I schools. The agency also says all its farmer grantees are small, mid-sized or socially and economically disadvantaged producers. Separately, the state’s universal school meals system has served approximately 3.5 billion free meals since the 2021 policy change.
Those figures represent different datasets. They should not be added together or misread to mean that exactly 3.5 billion meals were bought with the Farm to School grant money. Nor does statewide participation mean every school cafeteria uses exclusively California-grown produce.
What happens for the next Farm to School grants?
The California Department of Food and Agriculture’s program page identifies Cohort 4, with grant tracks covering school food procurement and education, technical assistance and producer/food hub projects. It says the draft application documents were open for public comment through September 11, 2026 and that comments are now under review.
As of the program information reviewed on October 18, a new application deadline should not be invented: interested schools, farm businesses and nonprofits need to consult CDFA’s current page and wait for its final round-specific application guidance. A draft request for applications is not itself an award or a guaranteed open application.
What parents can ask their schools
School meal managers can tell families whether and how their district participates in Farm to School procurement, where food is sourced, and whether gardens, cooking instruction or nutrition education are supported through this program. Food menus, allergen information and free meal eligibility are questions for the actual school district, not resolved simply by the statewide summit.
What farmers and food hubs should verify
For growers, the questions include whether a proposed grant track matches their organization, whether public or nonprofit partners are needed, what food safety or delivery requirements apply, and whether a current application period has formally opened. Grant awards are competitive, not automatic farm subsidies to every applicant.
More information is available in the official California Farm to School Incubator Grant Program portal and the October 16 state summit announcement. California58 will distinguish actual grant recipients and local procurement records from statewide totals in follow-up county reporting.
Editorial note: Funding, statewide impact measures and venue information are attributed to the governor’s office and CDFA. No new grant application window is represented as open without the grant administrator’s published instructions.
