How our 667 local newspapers cover California

The California58 Local network currently lists 667 published newspaper editions: 483 editions corresponding to California’s 483 incorporated cities, and 184 additional editions for other communities and places. Unincorporated does not automatically mean rural: some communities outside incorporated cities are suburban or urban, while some incorporated cities are rural. This Rural California page is a curated selection of 156 existing small-town and rural-oriented newspapers, not the full count of all unincorporated settlements or a second newspaper network. Every edition belongs to the one California58 network, and Trona, Argus and Pioneer Point remain coverage areas of Searles Valley News, not separate newspapers.

What is Rural California?

There is no single federal or California definition of “rural” for every purpose. The U.S. Census Bureau considers land and population outside its defined urban areas rural. USDA research often analyzes nonmetropolitan counties. The federal HRSA rural-health method may use county, census tract, commuting and terrain measures. A community may be rural under one program and ineligible under another. Read the USDA rural classifications and HRSA definition.

According to a March 2026 California HCAI briefing, California has over 2.7 million rural residents, and 57 of 58 counties contain rural areas. This does not mean 57 entire counties are classified as rural.

Why rural California deserves dedicated local reporting

Residents of small towns and remote communities can encounter distinct challenges involving roads, fuel and transportation, emergency alerts and wildfire evacuations, hospitals and clinics, groundwater, water service, schools, public meetings, land-use permits, broadband and reliable electricity. Original local journalism helps communities evaluate decisions and hear directly from people affected.

Rural California is an editorial hub, not a separate newspaper. Existing California58 community editions retain their own names, websites, archives, history, community services, subscriptions and support options. This page is not counted as a new newspaper and does not replace the full directory or the map.

What belongs on this list?

Our curated rural and small-town reporting directory covers remote settlements, rural communities and some regional gateway towns that serve surrounding remote populations. Its inclusion is an editorial classification, not a USDA, HRSA, Census or grant-eligibility determination. A nonprofit, business, homeowner or publication must independently check each program’s geographic and organizational rules.

Rural journalism funding and grants

Some foundations and public-private funding initiatives prioritize original reporting in underserved communities. The California Civic Media Program supports local and community news but its 2026 application window closed August 21, 2026. Press Forward publishes opportunities and eligibility guidance for local journalism. USDA Rural Development California supports community and rural development programs; those grants are not necessarily journalism grants.

Being listed on this page does not demonstrate that California58 or any community newspaper qualifies for grants. Funding eligibility also depends on applicant type, editorial output, geography, documented community impact, financial information, deadlines and specific grant requirements. Verify geographic eligibility directly through the USDA eligibility tool or HRSA’s rural definitions, as appropriate.
