SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. — Drivers using Highway 58 east of Santa Margarita should plan for weekday delays beginning Thursday, October 29, 2026. Caltrans District 5 says crews will replace damaged drainage culverts near Camatta Road as part of emergency preparations for winter weather.

Where and when traffic will be controlled

The planned work covers Highway 58 post miles 21 through 24, near Camatta Road. One-way reversing traffic control is scheduled for 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, affecting eastbound and westbound drivers. Caltrans estimates delays of up to 10 minutes and expects work to continue into early December.

Drivers should watch for advance warning signs and flaggers. The schedule describes planned work, not a guarantee that traffic control will be in effect at every moment; conditions may change because of weather, construction needs or an emergency.

Why the repairs matter

Culverts carry runoff beneath roads. Caltrans says damaged culverts are being replaced before the winter season. The agency did not announce a full closure of Highway 58 for this operation; the October 26 notice specifies alternating one-way traffic.

For residents of Santa Margarita and people traveling between the Central Coast and inland San Luis Obispo County, the most practical precaution is to allow extra time on weekdays, especially when an appointment or connection depends on a predictable arrival.
