WOODFORDS, Calif. — Alpine County residents looking to dispose of cardboard, cans, glass and other recyclable materials can use the county-operated Woodfords drop-off recycling center, but officials ask visitors to sort materials carefully.

When the recycling center is listed as open

According to the county’s Recycling Center page and Community Development Department, the Woodfords facility is scheduled to be open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The county describes the site as a drop-off facility. Residents should verify access before traveling, particularly during holidays or severe weather.

What can be brought to Woodfords

The county lists aluminum beverage cans, flattened cardboard, catalogs, cleaned glass without lids, magazines, newspaper, cleaned and flattened plastic containers, tin cans, white paper and motor oil among accepted materials. The county separately lists products that are not accepted, including plastic bags, Styrofoam, gasoline, antifreeze, packaging, aluminum foil and take-out food containers.

These restrictions matter because mixing garbage or restricted waste with recyclables can make processing more expensive. Alpine County requests that visitors sort, flatten and stack material by type before using the designated containers.

For household hazardous waste

The county’s recycling page directs residents to other regional providers for certain items. Those providers may require appointments, charge fees or impose their own restrictions. Call the destination before leaving home rather than assuming any facility accepts every hazardous material.
