ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. — For residents of remote Sierra communities, a storm, wildfire or closed mountain highway can make reliable local warnings particularly important. Alpine County offers more than one way to find notices, and those systems serve different purposes.

County alerts and Bear Valley notices

The county’s official Alert Center organizes messages by subject, including general emergency alerts and Bear Valley notifications. Residents can also visit the county’s Notify Me subscription page to subscribe to the specific categories they want to receive. The Bear Valley list is designed for information relevant to that community, while the separate Emergency Alerts category covers a broader area.

Sheriff-linked emergency notifications

The Alpine County Sheriff’s Office directs people who want to register for Reverse 911 emergency notifications to a Smart911 registration service associated with Douglas County, Nevada, emergency services. Although the link points to a Nevada-based service, it is listed by Alpine County’s own Sheriff’s Office as its registration route. Residents should follow the current link on the Sheriff’s page rather than rely on an old screenshot or an unofficial registration form.

People who have difficulty registering online can call the Sheriff’s Office at 530-694-2231 during normal business hours for assistance. In an immediate emergency, call 911.

What to check before severe weather

People in Markleeville, Woodfords, Kirkwood and Bear Valley should review the county’s official alert pages, make sure contact information is current and keep a second way of receiving information if internet or mobile service is interrupted. A county website notice is not a substitute for a real-time emergency call or an evacuation order delivered through other channels.
