CALIFORNIA — November 5, 2026. Californians planning a traditional local Dungeness crab dinner for Thanksgiving or Christmas face another difficult holiday season for the state’s fishing industry. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has postponed the commercial Dungeness crab season from the Oregon border to Point Conception until at least January 1, 2027, citing the risk of humpback whales becoming entangled in conventional fishing gear. The decision was announced October 30; this November 5 report explains what will happen when recreational fishing opens on Saturday, November 7, and what restrictions coastal residents should know.
Can California fishermen sell local crab this holiday season?
Not from the affected California commercial fishing zones under the current closure. The CDFW’s official notice states that commercial Dungeness crab fishing will not open in fishing zones 1–5 before January 1, 2027. State regulators plan another whale-entanglement risk assessment in mid-December before deciding whether to change the opening date. Restaurants and markets could still receive crab caught elsewhere, subject to applicable laws, so a delay in California commercial landings does not mean no crab can be sold anywhere in the state.
What happens on November 7?
In most California areas, recreational Dungeness crab fishing opens on Saturday, November 7, but the familiar conventional crab traps are prohibited from the Oregon border south to Point Conception until at least the new year. In open waters, hoop nets and crab snares (loop traps) remain allowable under applicable regulations. CDFW says hoop nets must be checked at least every two hours and must not be left unattended for longer periods. License rules, bag limits, size limits and marine-protected-area restrictions still apply.
Warning: one North Coast area stays closed due to a toxin
Recreational taking and possession of Dungeness crab remain prohibited in coastal waters from Cape Mendocino to the southern boundary of the Ten Mile State Marine Reserve, where health agencies identified unsafe levels of domoic acid. This algae-produced neurotoxin can accumulate in crab and cause serious illness if consumed. The closure will remain until health officials determine the risk no longer warrants it. It is a separate public-health restriction from the whale-protection rules.
Why do whales affect crab season?
Conventional crab traps often use vertical lines attached to surface buoys. Migrating humpback whales can become entangled in those lines, potentially causing severe injuries or death. CDFW says multiple confirmed 2026 entanglements triggered the mandatory delay and recreational gear restrictions. The policy is designed to reduce contact while whales remain numerous in California fishing grounds. Fishing families and seafood businesses, however, face lost income during an important holiday market, making the discussion of safer fishing technologies and practical assistance increasingly important.
