SAN BENITO COUNTY, California — November 5, 2026. The county’s early election count remains incomplete, with an estimated more than 16,382 vote-by-mail ballots awaiting tabulation following the November 3 general election. Local reporting citing the Registrar says 7,421 ballots were included in the first overnight count, out of a county electorate of 40,019 registered voters. The reported initial turnout of roughly 19% is not final participation.

The first count by voting method

According to SanBenito.com’s November 5 report, the early release includes 4,966 vote-by-mail ballots and 2,455 votes cast on Election Day. The reporting timestamp is 1:26 a.m. November 4, not a completed Thursday canvass. County officials also said more than 90% of voters in the county use mail voting, making the remaining envelopes particularly important to understanding how the next release could alter local results.

Where close races are being watched

In the city of Hollister, Tim Burns leads Tina Garza by 22 votes in the first mayoral count. Separate City Council contests have reported differences of seven and 39 votes. These are only the counted ballots for their respective districts, not predictions of the final countywide vote.

Small communities have different ballots

San Benito County includes Hollister, San Juan Bautista and rural, unincorporated communities that may be assigned to different county supervisor, school and special-district constituencies. A countywide unprocessed-ballot estimate cannot be allocated equally to those communities. Residents should compare each local race only with the official returns for the relevant district.

Why counted ballots and outstanding ballots differ

Mail ballots received near Election Day must be reviewed and validated. Provisional and conditional-registration votes may also require eligibility checks. California accepts qualifying mail ballots postmarked by November 3 and received by November 10. The backlog figure is a temporary estimate and can change as envelopes arrive and are sorted. All county results are unofficial until the mandated canvass is completed.

Official information

The San Benito County Elections Office is responsible for publishing updated local returns and certifying the election. The state’s county completion deadline is December 3, followed by statewide certification December 11. California58 will distinguish new county totals from its historical November 4 snapshots.
