SONOMA AND MARIN COUNTIES — November 5, 2026. Education governance in Northern California often extends beyond city and county boundaries. In a Sonoma County Board of Education, Trustee Area 2 election that includes reported votes from both Sonoma and Marin counties, Jonathan Lenz had 8,231 votes (51.8%) and Caitlin Quinn 7,631 (48.1%), a 600-vote lead in the early return available from KQED’s Marin County results. The count is unofficial.

Two counties, one education trustee contest

The result is especially easy to misinterpret: a voter residing in a Marin County area may participate in a trustee election administered together with Sonoma County’s educational jurisdiction. A Marin-only subtotal would not, by itself, describe the full race. The KQED presentation explicitly says its reported Area 2 tally includes votes from Marin and Sonoma counties; that combined scope is the basis of the figures above.

Why 600 votes does not automatically settle the result

In a two-candidate race with 15,862 reported valid votes, a 600-vote difference is roughly 3.8 percentage points. Any legally eligible unprocessed ballots from the relevant portions of the two counties can add to both sides. The article does not assert a number of outstanding Area 2 ballots: the counties’ overall backlogs include many voters from unrelated contests and should not be assigned to this trustee area without evidence.

Different from municipal school-board elections

County boards of education have different responsibilities from the governing boards of individual local school districts. They address county education office oversight and certain appeals and administrative issues, while a district board focuses on its own schools, employees, facilities and budget. The difference matters to families seeking public accountability and deciding which elected office serves their area.
