SEARLES VALLEY NEWS | EDUCATION & FAMILIES — Trona, San Bernardino County. A new county-school partnership is set to expand early-childhood services in the Searles Valley, where distance and limited local service options can make preschool access especially important.

At its October 6, 2026 meeting, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved a $960,000 contract with Trona Joint Unified School District to provide Head Start Preschool services in Trona through June 2030, according to the county’s October 8 public summary. The action establishes a funded partnership; it is not evidence that enrollment is open on any particular date or that a fixed number of places is already available.

What the approval provides

Head Start is a family-focused early-childhood program rather than a simple classroom-only service. The county identifies education, health, nutrition, parent involvement and other family supports among its components. Bringing those services through the local school district could reduce the need for qualifying families to look far outside the valley, although individual enrollment requirements and availability still need direct confirmation.

The board’s action matters for Trona because it names a local service provider and a multi-year commitment ending in June 2030. It also gives residents and reporters a concrete decision against which to check subsequent implementation: staffing, location, eligibility, hours and start dates.

Questions Trona families should ask

  • When will the district begin accepting applications, and what age groups and income criteria apply?
  • Where will preschool activities take place, and will transportation or other access support be offered?
  • Which health, nutrition and family services are available locally, and which require referrals?

These are questions for the district and the county Preschool Services Department, not promises that every listed service is already operating. Residents should obtain enrollment instructions directly from the responsible provider before making childcare plans.

Why this is important for Searles Valley

In a small, remote community, one program can serve multiple roles: preparing children for school, connecting parents with resources, and keeping essential services available close to home. That is why the contract deserves continuing local coverage beyond the initial approval. Searles Valley News will follow official implementation announcements and welcome verified information from families and educators.
