SAN MATEO, SAN MATEO COUNTY — OCTOBER 18, 2026. Drivers crossing the Peninsula on State Route 92 should plan for a temporary exit closure this week. Caltrans District 4 says the eastbound SR-92 off-ramp to Mariners Island Boulevard in San Mateo is scheduled to close overnight on Thursday, October 22, 2026, while crews perform roadway restriping. One eastbound mainline lane will also close during a separate overlapping window.
Exactly when is the exit unavailable?
Caltrans lists the Mariners Island Boulevard off-ramp closure from 9 p.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday, October 23. Drivers who normally use this eastbound exit must plan an alternative route and follow temporary freeway messages. The exit closure does not mean all eastbound lanes on SR-92 will shut down.
What happens on the main highway?
The department separately lists a one-lane reduction on eastbound SR-92 from 10 p.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. Friday. The lane reduction begins an hour later and is scheduled to end an hour later than the ramp restriction. Traffic may slow approaching the work area even if a motorist does not intend to take the Mariners Island exit.
Why is Caltrans closing the ramp?
The purpose is to restripe the off-ramp area as part of the broader US-101/SR-92 Short-Term Improvements Project. Caltrans identifies the overall project as a roughly $45 million investment co-sponsored by the San Mateo County Transportation Authority and the City/County Association of Governments. It is intended to improve operations, local connections and access near the freeway interchange. That project budget is not the price of this single night’s restriping.
How will this affect local travel?
Evening-shift employees, airport-area visitors, delivery drivers and travelers connecting between the Peninsula and the San Mateo–Hayward Bridge should check their desired exit in advance. A short ramp closure can force an unfamiliar detour, and GPS instructions may lag behind construction signs. Do not stop on the freeway shoulder or make an unsafe last-minute lane change.
Where can residents check changes?
Caltrans warns that work is weather dependent and schedules can change. Before leaving, open Caltrans QuickMap and review the official October 16 traffic advisory. Follow on-site signs and instructions over older online routing suggestions.
What changes for residents? The immediate effect is a one-night planned interruption to a specific SR-92 exit plus the eastbound lane reduction. No permanent closure or change to the basic route is described in the notice.
